Madonna del Carmine in Pedali di Viggianello
The second harvest ritual procession I photographed in 2016 takes place in the heart of the Pollino national park, in the lush valley of the river Mercure. On 19 August in the community of Pedali, part of the village of Viggianello (PZ), the festival is again in honour of the Virgin, the Madonna del Carmine. Here a larger bundle of wheat is carried by the men over their shoulder, not unlike the statue of a saint. The peculiarity of this particular festival is the presence of donated live animals that are then actioned to fund the festival itself and to contribute to the church. Again music is very present, in particular double reed instruments such as zampogna and ciaramella.
These photographs are part of a series on wheat festivals in Basilicata, in this case made with a Sony A7RII and three lenses: Sony 16-35/4 FE, Sony 55/1.8 FE and Zeiss 85/1.8 Batis.
